Reading Report

Come away from Reading happy with a draw - how things have changed !

Same team as Saturday - KB obviously following the don't change a winning team maxim - even if the winning team was sh*t. Luckily today turned into a vast improvement.

A cracking start Ormerod's cross from the right got a deflection and looped over the defenders for an unmarked Walton to nod in after a couple of minutes - whilst half the crowd were still trying to find somewhere to park.

However, as the first half  continued we tended to sit back and got put under an increasing amount of pressure. Sullivan was forced to make a good save from Goater after Butler missed the tackle on the edge of the box and we were lucky that a couple of chances were hit straight at the keeper. We only really had one other chance first half, when Ricketts turned his defender well and fizzed a shot across the face of goal. A few minutes later the equaliser game, Kitson headed down, Sullivan (who I thought might have done better) palmed it onto the post and Owusu tapped the rebound in.

We probably couldn't complain about one all at half-time and it looked likely to be a long second half hanging on, thankfully we put together one of our better halves of the season. Defence was solid and we managed to hold onto the ball a bit better in the middle. During the half, Spring, Deane and Joachim came on for Walton, Ricketts and the tiring Ormerod. Before then Sullivan had made a couple of decent blocks and one cross flew across the face with just a touch needed but there were no great alarms. Indeed as the half wore on we actually began to exert some control, even if aside from shots over from Gregan and Pugh we didn't look much like scoring. At least that is until injury time when Deane's header from a corner was hacked off the line.

 Scores

Sullivan 7

Couple of decent saves - though maybe should have got the ball round the post for the goal.

Killgallon 6.5 Some dodgy passing at times, but solid defensively
Kelly 8 Thought he had a good game, sweeping up a lot of threatening situations at the back.
Carlisle and Butler  7 The odd communications mix-up when they left it to each other but generally solid, there's no Henry's in this division so you just need to do the basics right and they do.
Richardson 6 Worked hard but the spark of earlier in the season seems to be missing.
Gregan and Walton 6 One major difference between these 2. Walton wins the ball and immediately gives it away, Gregan gets the ball wanders around in a circle for a minute and then gives it away.
Pugh 8 Lively, our main threat until the subs late on.
Ricketts 6 Tidy enough with the ball but doesn't seem to work hard enough to get in positions to receive it
Ormerod 7.5 Tried really hard, but his main tactic does seem to be just to bundle through challenges as per Sat.
Subs
Spring 7 solid enough.
Deane 7 Won a bit more in the air. Is an astonishingly unlucky striker, as the last minute clearance proved.
Joachim 8 Very lively ten minutes - a bit of pace makes a huge difference.
